Hearing from God: still and alone

* Keiger, it's an honor to be part of this awesome blog!

Last night at InterVarsity, we were blessed to have a guest speaker--- Uncle Paul, a local pastor and the nephew of John and Betty Stam (a famous martyred missionary couple from China Inland Missions).  He told us that we all have a legacy, whether it is a family legacy, a national legacy, or a God-given legacy.  He shared how he tried to deny his Godly legacy by becoming an atheist, despite his Christian upbringing --- until God spoke to him.

His testimony was quite elaborate, so I won't get into it, but he emphasized the importance of communicating with God.

Here's some of his main points:

- Relationship with God doesn't make sense.  It makes faith.

- Meditate on God -- BE STILL
Talking to God is like talking to someone you love.  You don't talk about yourself or all the little things you want.  Instead, you fixate on that person.  When you fixate on God rather than yourself, He'll know you want to hear from Him.

- In the Bible, every time people heard from God was when they were alone with Him.
They weren't at fancy conventions or concerts!
When you want to be intimate with someone, you don't take that person out to the club-- you get him/her alone so that you can talk in private.

I personally found Uncle Paul's message very helpful.  But then again, I'm quite the spiritual neophyte.  I pray I haven't slandered Uncle Paul, and I pray you all experience greater intimacy with our greatest lover!

Wow. It sounds like a great talk/testimony. Those all sound like pretty good tips on listening to God. And I agree with the conference things. I enjoy going to them, just like people enjoy going to a party, but usually the intimate communication with God comes before, after and in between. This time much of our conversation happened while I was driving to and from the conference.

Thanks for sharing.
